Sugar Lump Studios

Art by Nancy Maxwell James

{Somerset Studio Spring 2011}

March 22, 2011

I was thrilled to receive the new issue of “Somerset Memories” over the weekend. It has been a very long time since I submitted anything to the magazines, and last summer two of my fabric collages were accepted for print.

The article is on pages 85 – 87 of this issue:

This fabric collage features my Grandparent’s (maternal) Orla Ford and Jessie Simms (later Ford) when they attended a one room school house in Redford, Michigan. My Great-Uncle William Simms and Great-Aunt Florence Simms are also among the class.

This collage is one of my favorite photos from my cabinet card collection. She is not a relative…just love her sweet face. Her name is Cora Zell and she was from Michigan. I found her at the local Antique’s Mall a few years back and wanted to make a piece using her.

I also have a fabric cone that was featured on page 73:

Thank you Somerset! :)

    Congratulations! Both of your fabric collages are amazing. The way you captured your Grandparent's, makes me wonder what they did after the class picture! Beautiful creations!

    I love that fabric cone, it's not only beautiful but it would make such a great home decor piece hanging from a door knob. I might have to borrow your idea and try and make one? Thanks btw for visiting my blog and for your kind words you left. I am always thrilled and humbled when an artist that I so greatly admire visits my blog and leaves me with warm/kind words. Thank you. I haven't received my new Somerset Memories yet, but as soon as I do I'll be looking for your amazing submissions.
