Sugar Lump Studios - A Sweet Smattering of Mixed Media Art

Busy Bee Handmade Journal

February 9, 2022

Hello!

Today, I am sharing this handmade journal that was made with an open spine concept. This is my first time making a journal like this, but thanks to Heather over at Ruby and Pearlxo on Youtube she can walk you through the whole concept and process.

The theme of this journal is “Bees”…I have incorporated scrapbook papers, coffee stained papers, ephemera, envelopes, tags, specialty papers, music sheets, embossed paper, machine stitching, vintage ribbons, laces and trims. It was a lot of fun to make!

There are 52 pages and the front and back covers have interior pockets to tuck items in.

One Handmade Card Three Ways

February 1, 2022

I fell in love with this sweet vintage image recently. When I created with it on a neutral background my mind wandered. What would it look like to use the same image on 3 different cards? So, today my post is just about that!

The first card is done purely neutral. The background is a book page. She still looks lovely with very little color. The next two cards were made using a green floral and green dot digital paper. Different vintage laces were also added. The sweet image takes on new look, but adding color she is just so pretty still.

Which card do you like best?

Notes d’amour and Tinsel Hearts

January 28, 2022

This project is from the archives. It was part of 14heARTS. You can click on that tag in the side bar to bring up the projects.

Notes d’amour

Make these sweet little notes and give to someone you love or hang them in your home, office, or studio. Each pocket contains a special heart to pull out.

Supplies:

French Ephemera (Graphics Fairy)
Post Card Graphics Fairy
Collage Image Chicks57
Old Sheet Music
Silver Tinsel Stems
Seam Binding Ribbon
Vintage Buttons
White Prima Flowers
Silver Doilies
Sewing Machine
Double Sided Tape
Cardboard
Hot Glue Gun
E6000 Glue
Photo Matte Paper
Eyelets

Technique:

(1) Print out 2 postcards on photo matte paper in Microsoft Word making sure the images are the same size.

(2) Cut images and size front to back using double sided tape. Stitch on machine along all edges except the top edge.

(3) Set 2 eyelets on front of postcard and run a seam binding ribbon handle through. Tie off leaving streamer ends.

(4) Decorate the front of the postcard using silver doilies (folded in half), prima flowers and vintage buttons. E6000 is the best glue to make these items hold.

(5) Trace heart shape on cardboard. Cover front and back sides of heart cardboard shape with music sheets. Trim off access.

(6) Using a glue gun add small bits of hot glue to edge of heart, slowly bending tinsel stems. At bottom of heart point, trim tinsel stem. Start with a fresh tinsel stem gluing the rest of the way along the heart edge.

(7) Add small bits of ephemera and the vintage collage image on front of heart. Type out the words “My Sweet Valentine” and add to front of heart using double sided tape.

Bewitched Halloween Cone

October 25, 2021

The whisper of October’s falling leaves, crisp air, and colorful pumpkins everywhere…this “Bewitched Cone” is an enchanting project sure to get you in the Halloween spirit.

This project is from the 2011 Design Team archives. I thought it would be fun to showcase it again 10 years later!

Supplies:

Paper Whimsy Collage Images

Rusty Bell Garland

Studio Cloth

Kraft Shed

Rustic Folk Star

Rustic Pins

Black Ball Trim or lace

Black Ribbon

Black Craft Paint

Tacky Glue

Cheesecloth

Silver Sparkle

Technique:

(1) Trace large circle (I used a dinner plate) on to Studio Cloth. Cut out and cover with black craft paint. Once dry, flip and cover areas that will peek out when it is rolled into a cone.

(2) Roll circle into a cone shape. Glue areas where the cone meets and clamp to dry with clothespins or book binding clips.

(3) When cone is dry, add black lace around top edge. This can be done with a needle and thread or hot glue gun.

(4) Cut black ribbon for handle hanger and black ribbon streamers for front. Tack on with a few stitches.

(5) Print Single30b PNG (isn’t she spooky?) on to matte card stock photo paper. Cut out a piece of chipboard to match photo dimensions and collage image using Perfect Paper Adhesive or Matte Gel Medium. Set aside to dry.

(6) Coat Rustic Folk Stars with Perfect Paper Adhesive and dust with a coat of silver glitter. Glue star to center front of cone, and glue two of the stars to bamboo skewers. Tie black ribbon underneath.

(7) Print script from Backgrounds 02 PNG and roll. Attach a staple in back to secure.

(8) Cut and tea stain two pieces of cheese cloth (approximately 4.5 inches by 10 inches each). Set aside to dry.

(9) Stuff cone with kraft shred. Add photo, rolled script tube, tuck cheesecloth in front and back of cone, silver stars, and straw flowers.

(10) Dust the cone with black glitter in certain areas using tacky glue.

(11) Wrap rusty bell garland around the base of the cone. You may need to glue it at the back to hold the bells in place.

This cone will make a charming accent to your home, office, studio or to give as a gift this Halloween season.
