Sugar Lump Studios - A Sweet Smattering of Mixed Media Art

Water & Wild Art Journal Pages

July 26, 2021

This journal spread was made in my Moleskine art journal. The colors are more of a summery blue, perhaps that is what I was feeling or longing for at the moment. I love to get to the Great Lakes each summer and this year sadly it has not happened.

The lyrics are Loreena McKennitt. I used paints, pattern papers, Liquidtex Matte Gel Medium, collage images (girl and butterflies), washi tape and old postage stamp on this piece. The lyrics were printed in word and hand cut and laid out on the pages. That is probably the most tedious portion of the whole process!

Busy Bee Journal Cover

July 22, 2021

This little journal was quick and easy to make using cardstock I had as the cover and mixed media art paper as the inside papers. I decorated it using vintage lace, pattern paper (Tim Holtz) and American Craft. The image of the busy bees I printed out and added a tea stained tag that was stamped. Little mother of pearl buttons are accents.

Purple Summer Journal Pages

July 17, 2021

This journal spread is one that was creating in my Moleskine Journal. I purchased the book in February 2019, and now have about half of it filled. While I do love to journal using paints, papers, gesso, metallic etc. it is much more time consuming then just paper collage.

The pages were painted with a plum purple first. I always place wax paper underneath the pages that are being painted on. It helps with bleeding of color along the edges. Then I went back and watered down some white craft paint and painted it over the purple. It came out a little more chalky then I liked, so I went back in with the plum but VERY watered down.

Next, I punched out various circles using 3 different pattern papers. They were applied with Matte Gel Medium (Liquidtex) which is my favorite to use. The hardest part (for me at least) in the process is being patient while things dry. Once the circles were dry I added the collage image, postcard, and white butterflies. I am really, really in to white butterflies right now. They are so neutral and go with any art I make. But, I know it is making my art look the same.

Next, I typed up some song lyrics in Microsoft word (Enya – I Could Never Say Goodbye) and cut them into strips placing them on the pages. I used to be more fussy that they were straight and placed evenly on the pages. Now, I am giving in to letting it be more “quirky” when creating. I added paint along the edges using a q-tip, and dots with two different colors of metallic markers.

Thanks for stopping by!

Sweet Roses Journal Page

July 4, 2021

Today, I am sharing this simple Traveler’s Notebook spread. I used my metallic markers to make the dots around the edge. Doing that is really good hand physical therapy for me. Then I added little bits of turn polka dot paper and dictionary ephemera. Digital tags were printed out and added. I also added a jewelry tag. For the finishing touch, strips of song lyrics at the top and bottom of each page.

I hope you all had a Happy Fourth of July!
