Art by Nancy Maxwell James

{Ode to Connie Govea Stuart}

February 12, 2008

This post is an ode to Connie Govea Stuart – aka CGS. I say aka CGS because when she comes to my blog that is how she signs the post and I know she was HERE! Please don’t get me wrong – I get excited when I see “anyone” was here and posted – but Connie holds a special place in my heart.

It began when I picked up my first issues of Legacy magazines that I noticed her work and started remembering her name. I was a scrapbooker then but was mesmerized by mixed media art. As the years went on I continued to see her name, beautiful art and articles. Then I started dabbling.

One day early last fall I emailed her (found her email somehow) and asked if she was ever going to get a blog. She emailed back that she was truly “thinking about it” which I was pleased to hear. A month or so later she left a little post and I knew “CGS” had been here.

About 3 weeks after my major surgery in December 2007 I received an email from her and she wanted my address. Connie said she wanted to send me a little something.
I was as happy as a pig in mud. What would she want to send me something for? Then I remembered that part of my artist of the month info at MMCA stated that my favorite artist was Connie Govea Stuart – did she possibly know that? Did she read it or did a friend share it with her?

On a cold day in December I received the most beautiful package in the mail. The box alone was so elegant with beautiful tissue inside and the most wonderful of treasures…all made by CGS! I was in heaven with each item and could not believe that this wonderful lady took the time to box up such lovely treasures to send to me.
I don’t hang out with her, we are not involved on message boards or yahoo groups but we had art in common.

Today I wanted to share these LOVELY treasures with you. Each piece is done in the sweetest detail but the one that tugged at my heart the most was the little paper dress. The button on it is stamped “Ayr” – and that is where my grandparents, great-grandparents were from in Scotland and the remaining ancestors live today! :)

Connie Govea Stuart is a Director’s Circle Artist for Stampington magazine. I hope you enjoy the treasures that she shared from her heart. I also hope you will post to encourage her to get a blog – I know she would have TONS of visitors!

    This post actually made the hairs on my arm stand up! I started art almost exactly the same way, reading the magazines and loving the works of CGS and Lisa Guerin and finally getting the nerve to make some of my own. I, too, have looked for a blog for CGS and puzzled over her not having one. I would so love to visit there and I am sure there are many more just like us. Great presents; thanks so much for sharing this story. Cheers, Trish G.

    I am a huge fan of Connie's work and would be thrilled if she had a blog. I've kept many of the Legacy/Somerset issues that specificially had her work in them so that I could go back and look at them again. She is awesome. Thanks for a lovely post about her.
